Weekly On-Air Meetings
There is a weekly SCARC VHF rag-chew activity hour, and Dx’ing net on the W2LV repeater frequency 147.300 MHz EVERY Tuesday at 8:00 pm. Newcomers? New to a certain aspect of radio? Experienced operator willing to share in the growth of the hobby? All are welcome and encouraged.
We are having a great time on our 75M net on 3.963MHz +/- QRM on Thursday nights. It’s fun getting off the repeater for a change and getting on to HF. This net allows us to experiment with different equipment, antennas and modes of operation to determine what works and doesn’t work at our home station. All topics are open for discussion. Even if you only want to listen, please join us.
From the Office of the President - N2HMM John Santillo
Well the weather is getting warmer which gets us outside for cleaning, gardening and enjoying the weather. It’s also the time to start planning and organizing upcoming SCARC events that occur over the next few months.
I’m hoping over the next six weeks we can organize work parties for upgrading the 147.33 machine and maintenance and upgrades to the 147.30 site. There is also storage trailer work, Hamfest, Field Day and VHF contest planning.
Some dates to remember if you wish to participate in any of our club activities.
- Sunday April 21st – Rookie Roundup from 2pm to 8pm at the Sussex County EOC
- Saturday May 11th – The 6M Sprint (at a site still to be determined)
- Friday, Saturday Sunday June 7th, 8th and 9th – VHF Contest at the Normanoch Fire Tower
- Friday, Saturday Sunday June 21st, 22nd and 23rd – Field Day (at a site still to be determined)
- Saturday and Sunday July 13th and 14th – SCARC Hamfest at the Sussex County Fairgrounds
Please mark your calendars and pass the pass the word along. We need your help to make these events a success.
Rookie Round-up - W2FDB Frank Brunke
The Rookie Roundup is a contest aimed at Amateurs licensed for three years or less. This six-hour event is held three times per year (April, August and December). Rookies can contact anybody, while "Old Timers" make contact with only Rookies. Mentoring is a big part of this event!
We will conduct the RR this year at the EOC (Sussex County Emergency Operations Center, 135 Morris Turnpike
Newton, NJ 07860). If you have obtained your license in the years 2011 to 2013 you can participate in this event.
The event will start at 2pm and continue till 8pm. We also plan to make a dipole and use it to opperate!

FCC RF Exposure Rules - N2HMM John Santillo
The FCC has issued a notice of proposed rule making called a “Reassessment of FCC RF Exposure Limits and Policies”.
The document number is FCC 13-39 and is 201 pages long.
This document proposes changes in RF exposure levels to all radio emitters including Amateur Radio. It also includes a new initiative on investigating the hazards of cellular phones.
I understand the intent of the FCC and agree on requiring amateurs to include in their analysis the need to consider separation distances, antenna gain and the impact or RF on family members but I do not agree on the means to that end.
Amateurs would be required to be “trained” on the impact of RF exposure levels which include members of their household. In addition CB’ers, GMRS radio, R/C, FRS, medical implant devices, etc. would require to be “tested” before use approval. I find this portion of the rules making ridiculous.
The exposure levels the FFC is proposing will go down meaning RF is more of a hazard now then it was in 1996 when the RF Exposure rules were first put in place. If the EPA has its way those levels will go down even further. What I also find interesting is that cell phones users were exempt (probably until further analysis is conducted) and microwave ovens weren’t even mentioned. So for now, talking on your cell phone while watching your popcorn pop in the microwave oven is OK.
